Diocesan Development & Welfare Society under the aegis of Manos Unidas implemented the project “Education & Rehabilitation of the Children living in the Slums of Allahabad” in 20 different slum areas of Allahabad District of Uttar Pradesh, India.

The main objective of the project was to improve the status of children living in slums of the city and to work for the rights and privileges of the community members. The project provided education to the children between 6 – 14 years living in slums through established 20 Non-formal Education centres and was further enrolled in to the government school. Since there are several other issues in slums on one side such as needs of the families in terms of food, health services, housing, livelihood options etc., on the other hand the negative impact and effects of poverty, unemployment, poor and inadequate infrastructures in slum area which create hindrance in their development. The project also ensured that people living in slums also get the benefit of various rights, entitlement and services of the government. Adolescent girls living in slums were also given training on tailoring, which is run by the support of DDWS. During the year various activities were implemented for the development of the community members under the project such as:

  • Regular classes in the established 20 NFE centres
  • Distribution of Books and Stationeries
  • health camps
  • Awareness programme on education, health & hygiene, government programmes etc. through puppet shows
  • Various competitions on art/ craft/ drawing/ essay writing/ dance/ skit etc.
  • Community meetings on various issues such as child health, women health, women empowerment, domestic violence, entitlements etc.
  • Home visits
  • Group discussion on importance of education and its right, roles & responsibilities of parents
  • Training programme for the NFE teachers on teaching and Learning Method was conducted twice a year.
  • Celebration of important days.
  • Networking with various non-government organizations, Government officials of health department, labour office etc.
  • Mobilize community on various services of the Government such as Government Identity Proofs, Cooking gas connections, Bank accounts, Voters ID card, Health card, Ration card, PAN card etc
  • Follow-up of the children mainstreamed.
