Description: Diocesan Development & Welfare Society under the aegis of Manos Unidas celebrated Independence Day of India with great enthusiasm and patriotic fervor. Independence Day on 15th August 2019 at all the NFE centers. This year in 2019, India celebrated its 73rd Independence Day to pay tribute and remember all the freedom fighters who had contributed a lot and fought for the Independence of India. Children of all the centers were told about the relevance of Independence Day by NFE teachers that the republic of India gained its independence from the rule of the British on 15 August 1947. Since then every year, 15th August is celebrated as the Independence Day in India to commemorate its freedom from the 200-year-old British government. The cultural programme at every center commenced with all the children singing together “Vande Mataram”. All the NFE centers teachers requested some local leader / government school teacher/ community representatives for ‘Flag Hoisting’. Flag hoisting was done at every center which created a good example of patriotism. Good number of people gathered for the flag hoisting. Later the spirit of freedom and nationalism was well exhibited by the children of our NFE centers through spectrum of patriotic poems, speeches, quiz on freedom fighters, songs and dance. Committed to nation building, both NFE teachers and children pledged to serve our motherland through spreading education and serving the community. On the occasion sweats were distributed to all the children studying at our NFE centers. Voices shouting in unison “Vande Mataram”, “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Jai Hind” etc. enhanced the patriotic feeling in the hearts of all present there. This was an eye opener on the hidden talents of the students in the slum for volunteers. The joy of parents when their kids performed can’t be explained in words. All the NFE teachers at their respective centers delivered the short speech. They told the children about the supreme sacrifice the great martyrs who gave their lives for the sake of freedom. They also said that the freedom was very precious and it was very necessary to preserve it. The celebration ended with inspiring words, followed by the National Anthem and then distribution of sweets. Indeed, it was a day of joy, a day to love and respect our country and make it a better place for Indians to live and experience the freedom, peace and unity in diversity.
