Description: Diocesan Development & Welfare Society under the aegis of Manos Unidas celebrated Gandhi Jayanti with Slum children on 2nd October 2019 to commemorate the birth anniversary of the father of our nation-Mahatama Gandhi. The morning began with a special tribute to Gandhi ji. Going a step forward in helping the children understand all about the freedom struggle and the role of Mahatama Gandhi in helping us win our independence non-violently, our non-formal education teachers shared their thoughts with children. They also told that on 2nd of October a great person Mahatma Gandhi was born in the year 1869 at Porbandar in the Gujarat and the name of his parents were Karamchand Gandhi and Putlibai. Thus the children of our NFE centers were given a deep insight into the life and times of Mahatma Gandhi and encouraged to think about the sacrifice of our freedom fighters, analyze the importance and understand the value of freedom, through the day’s activities. The splendid event also included with a graceful dance performance, speech, play by the children of NFE centers. Following the principles of Gandhi Ji on Swachata, children of slums were encouraged by NFE teachers to clean their surroundings, spreading the message of maintaining clean environment to all around. At the end of the programme the NFE teacher of their respective centers gave a very useful speech about Gandhi ji’s work and advised us to obey those rules and to apply those in our daily life. The day ended with children marking their respect by singing, “Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram….’ which aptly matched with the principles of our ‘Father of the Nation’. Students also promised to abide by the “Swachata campaign. With a thought in everybody’s mind that cleanliness is next to godliness and service to mankind is the first step towards reaching it the programme came to an end.
